Hey Isaac 💞

Thanks to you posting on social média I subscribed to your Substack and discovered Gabrielle : even though I knew Ricochet and Pivot, I did not know they were related and whose brainchild they were.

I liked your posts introducing a cheeky investigation that should be the norm <=> the conflict of interest between owning houses and managing Housing…

I stopped watching TV in 2002 and stopped caring about the “show des nouvelles” that was not adequate for my understanding, I receive newsletters on my topics of interest.

I am glad your “format”, flavour or je-ne-sais-quoi, makes me follow current news.

I am Grateful!

Keep on keeping on 🙏🏻

(World news are actionable to a point: knowing Iran is being bombed makes me write to and support my Iranian friend who is raising a family with a French guy in Longueuil ^^ and I will join protests when possible)

Hi Isaac. I think there is no "movement" or political party to plug into. Information is one thing, and the flip side of that coin is action. I think we need to be studying social movements and creating them.

Hey Isaac, I wanted to reply as someone you've kind of guided along a similar search for better quality of new and media. There is so much and I'm still reading but I had to pause here and answer as a human, who not long ago was falling into the polarizing traps of social media and algorithmic manipulation. You helped me change my approach and your content rescued my Instagram algorithm. So in reply to this particular paragraph I have some personal feedback.

"Seeing these insane replies to my videos has been making me question the validity of what I have been doing."

Even if you only impacted me meaningfully in your intended way and helped create someone more politically and socially aware about issues important to him, you succeeded. But I'd guess I'm not alone. Your coverage of our Canadian election candidates directly informed my decision.

Am I, through attempting to communicate facts, causing further division? I’m critical of people who are doing news journalism on social media who court controversy, but by the very nature of being on there am I courting that same controversy?

The controversy and division do not require courting. They are to be expected with the uncertainty of so much of the world currently. Wars erupting, pandemic, recessions, housing crises, inflation and the list goes on. People latch onto whatever belief or group that feels the most stable and safe and attack anything that threatens the every shrinking feeling of certainty they have.

As a journalist you have to remember all you can do is tell the truth and innovate and find ways to continue to do that. The hard facts you present will be received by people differently based on the narrative they are fed. You maintaining your journalistic standards and integrity is all that matters.

Which brings me to my last point. The only mistake I see you making so far, is taking responsibility for how others are impacted by facts. Especially the housing crises critics. They are vested interest groups attacking the threat to a shrinking sense of security. You keep doing the right thing. We love you for it.

Hope this reaches you. Hope it helps at least address this uncertainty for you. Much respect Isaac. 🙏

If my social media is all about my brand, it’s not what I’m interested in doing. What I want is to make investigations that matter, not make commentary.

This is slippery, but, if you don't have a brand and some bombastic more sensationlized coverage you bring in less viewers. I wouldn't have found you if you hadn't done a great piece on Carney and Pollierve. You can be entertaining and truthful. Build your brand and retain your integrity. These things are not mutually exclusive, especially to an individual as hyper vigilant about their own transgressions as yourself.

I can only speak for myself Isaac but you're why I'm even on substack in the world of social media and clips you are having an impact even when you don't see it. Which is as wierd as I feel having typed all of this.... I want you to know it worked... at least one time. I needed news I could trust, got that and a lesson in my own responsibility to continue criticizing the media I'm exposed too.
