The Week Summarized
This week the United States bombed Iran, apparently to try and deescalate the war. The country responded by bombing a United States base in Qatar, although with ample warning. Prime Minister Mark Carney was so impressed by the response of Iran, that in an interview with CNN, he complimented their response as de-escatory. Israel and Iran are currently holding a ceasefire, with many people assuming that both country’s missile stocks are the main reason why.
In the same CNN interview, Carney said some of the most unhinged opinions that have ever been uttered by a politician, saying that Palestinians need to be Zionists? It was an engaging interview that melted our brains sometimes. Canada also committed to the new NATO target of 5% spending of GDP on military, an extremely lofty goal and would cost upwards of $150 billion a year for Canada. However, it seems that Mark Carney is considering much of the resource development he has already put underway to equal military spending.
Donald Trump cancelled the trade talks with Canada, citing a distaste for the digital sales tax.
Bill C-5, a bill to rapidly speed up resource development, passed in the Senate this week, and has received royal assent. This bill will likely be taken to court.
Finally, Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist with more or less the same views as an NDP politician, won the Democratic primary for New York Mayor, causing the entire MAGA world to freak out, as well as the Democratic establishment.
